Madras, Oregon was either named after the plaid cotton fabric originating from Madras, India (now Chennai, India), or after the city itself. However, Madras, Oregon was first named Palmain after a misspelling of an original town immigrant Palmehm. However, the Palmain name was soon rejected by the United States Postal Service due to its similarity to another Oregon town at the time, Parmen. Madras, Oregon was then incorporated as an Oregon city in 1911. The Erickson Aircraft Collection, a privately owned collection of vintage aircraft which are still airworthy, resides in Madras. In August 2017, Madras was a prime viewing location for the solar eclipse. The centerline of the path of totality traveled very near to Madras, and since the city is in a high desert region with typically clear skies in August, the town was prepped for an influx of sixteen times the population.
