Previously occupied by two competing lumber mills dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, the historic 270acre Old Mill District is now a mixed-use area, popular for its shops and restaurants. As part of the Southern Crossing neighborhood, it contains the riverfront Les Schwab Amptitheatre and the first permanent (12hole) fly casting course of its kind in North America. After years of environmental clean-up and reconstruction, the Old Mill District earned the developer a Lifetime Achievement Award in the 2014 Building a Better Central Oregon Awards, became a finalist for the 2016 Urban Land Institute’s Global Awards for Excellence, and received a national 2017 Excellence on the Waterfront Award from the Waterfront Center.
